Summer is finally here, and while many of us have been making the most of warm, sunny days, an extreme rise in temperatures can be less welcome for our four legged friends. Dogs aren’t able to regulate their temperatures as effectively as we can; they use panting to keep cool and the only place they’re able to sweat is through their paw pads.
Overheating can be a serious issue for dogs, and certain breeds, larger dogs and older dogs may struggle more on hot days. However, your dog still needs exercise everyday, so it’s important to know how to keep them cool when the temperatures rise. With this in mind, see below for our guide to keeping your furry friends cool during the summer.
Walk early or late in the day
You might have to adjust your walking times slightly during very hot days and avoid walking your dog between 12 and 3pm, when temperatures tend to be the hottest. Stick to early mornings and evenings when the temperatures are cooler and it’s more comfortable for you both.
Set aside a dedicated cool space
Dogs will seek out shady, cool spots when it’s very hot, so set aside a space in your home for them to easily cool down. You can buy specialist cool pads and mats from pet shops, or lay some damp towels on the floor for your dog to lie on. You could also add a fan or wrap an ice pack in a towel.
Never leave dogs in cars
Never, ever leave your dog unattended in a hot car, even if you’ve parked in the shade and cracked the windows open. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise very quickly and it doesn’t take long at all for your dog to become uncomfortable and distressed.
Carry water at all times
Carry plenty of water and a bowl whenever you’re out and about, especially if you’re on a long walk. Access to clean drinking water is essential all year round, but especially during the summer when your dog will become thirsty much quicker. Take regular breaks to give your dog a drink in the shade when on the go.
