Twenty-first century veterinary clinic in Dalkeith

Our brand new, purpose-built veterinary practice can provide a wide range of pet care services. Here are just some of them.

Ultrasound:
Ultrasound can be used in pregnancy diagnosis, examination of kidney, bladder, liver, spleen and other abdominal organs, imaging of the eye and many other applications.
The probe produces very high frequency sound waves which mass through and reflect off different densities of tissues to varying degrees. Returning waves are detected by the probe and an image created on the screen.

Digital X-ray:
Digital X-rays are used diagnostically in many conditions. Thoracic radiography will allow the evaluation of the size of the heart and can show changes in the lung field.
Abdominal radiographs are best known for showing up swallowed foreign bodies. Skeletal X-rays may help with the diagnosis of lameness conditions.

Electrocardiography

Electrocardiography is used in the evaluation of the cardiac patient. It reveals information relating to heart chamber size and is particularly useful in the assessment of arrhythmias. The file can also be emailed, if needed, to a cardiologist.

Lab analysis and testing:
Whilst some blood samples are sent into the lab, a lot can be done in the clinic with analyser machines, e.g. T4 levels in hyperthyroid cats and ELISA test kits for pancreatic lipase, Feline leukaemia (FeLV) and FIV. Slides can be prepared for microscopy, whether it's urine sediment in a cystitis case or a skin scrape from a patient with dermatitis. Biochemistry can be tested diagnostically or prior to an anaesthetic.

Anaesthetic and effective recovery

Patient monitoring through an anaesthetic makes the procedure safer. This is always done by a nurse but an additional help is to have an ECG and respiratory monitor as we do. We also measure core patient temperature, allowing us to heat the patient accordingly and improve recovery.

Ambulance:
Our new ambulance is used on house visits and in patient transportation.
